A hysteroscopy is done to view the lining of the uterus. A thin instrument called a hysteroscope is inserted into the vagina and moved gently through the cervix into the uterus. The hysteroscope has a camera with a little light that shows an image of the uterine lining on a video screen.

Hysteroscopy Purposes

A hysteroscopy may be done for a variety of purposes:

  • To determine the cause of abnormal bleeding, in which case a heated tool can be passed through the hysteroscope to stop the bleeding
  • To see if a problem in the uterus is preventing pregnancy
  • To remove fibroids, polyps or other growths in the uterus
  • To find and remove a misplaced intrauterine device (IUD)
  • To check for endometrial cancer
  • To remove problem areas in the lining of the uterus (endometrial ablation)
  • To place a contraceptive implant into the opening of the fallopian tubes as a form of permanent sterilization

During a hysteroscopy, a small sample of tissue (biopsy) can be taken. The sample is viewed with a microscope to check for any problems. In cases of infertility, another surgery, called a laparoscopy, may also be performed at the same time as a hysteroscopy.
